It all began in a small bakery

On 8 August 1885, Jules Destrooper wrote epicurean history. Without knowing it at the time. That was the day Jules opened a small, cosy bakery in the town of Lo in West Flanders.

Ambitious by nature, Julius Renatus Maria Destrooper combined his bakery with a shop in colonial wares from Africa and Asia. An inspired idea, because that’s how he distinguished himself from the five other bakers in the village. Customers travelled especially to Lo for Jules’s coffee, tobacco, chocolate and spices.

The first biscuit … an immediate success

Jules used the spices from his shop to make wafer-thin Almond Thins, which he gave to his customers as a promotional gift.

Soon, more people were coming to Lo for his Almond Thins than for the exotic merchandise. Jules immediately saw the potential in these popular biscuits.

The rest is history… So much history, in fact, that we’ve listed the highlights on a timeline for you. Grab a biscuit and scroll through at your leisure.

Biscuit ingredients become scarce and too expensive. The bakery has to close.

So, Jules Destrooper Junior dives into his other passion: photography. His photos of Lo-Reninge and the surrounding area appear on postcards, which soldiers send back to the home front.

Butter is scarce in these turbulent times, and the biscuit factory goes through a difficult period.

Due to rationing measures, Jules Destrooper's biscuits become almost impossibly expensive. The customer now pays 60 francs for a box of Butter Crisps that normally costs 15 francs.

More than 20 years later, Takeshi accidentally rediscovers our biscuits at Brussels Airport and brings our delicacies to the Land of the Rising Sun. His company – Americo, now led by his son Ted – still does that today.

Conditions of personalised Jules Destrooper boxes

Jules Destrooper offers its customers the opportunity to personalise 3 types of boxes in its webshop with a message of their choice in the logo. The products that can be personalised are the Butter Crisps 100 g, Butter Waffles 100 g and Almond Thins 100 g. The customer indicates on the product page of one of these 3 products which message he/she wants to see printed on the packaging. Through our preview mode, the customer can immediately visualise and double-check his/her personalised variant. Changes can be made via the shopping cart. Jules Destrooper cannot be held liable for any errors in the spelling of the message passed on by the customer. The personalised message is limited to 24 characters. Special characters and emojis are not allowed. Before the personalised box is printed, it is checked by a Jules Destrooper employee, who determines whether the message may be printed in this way. If Jules Destrooper determines that the message cannot be printed, Jules Destrooper will contact the customer and ask him to deliver a new message. As long as the customer has not provided feedback, the order will not be processed. Jules Destrooper reserves the right to refuse a message:

Furthermore, the customer accepts that the delivery of an order including a personalised box may take 3 to 5 working days (for deliveries in Belgium – for other countries it might take a few extra days), after approval of the message that needs to be printed on the personalised box. The other products from the customer's order (= the products that cannot be personalised) will therefore be delivered at the same time, since there is only one delivery.
